Founder’s Note

The Black Joy Galaxy exists to ensure that Black and Brown young people are not defined by adversity, but empowered by identity, belonging, and imagination.

Our communities deserve more than survival.

We deserve expansion.

We deserve authorship.

We deserve a future shaped by our own vision.

The Black Joy Galaxy

Advancing Trauma-Informed Schools into “JoI”-Empowered Communities

Healing Stabilizes. Joy Empowers. Empowered Communities Build the Galaxy.

The Black Joy Galaxy exists to help Black and Brown people — especially our young people — claim, sustain, and shape the narrative of our future.

They distorted the narrative of our past.

For generations, our brilliance was minimized.
Our resilience was romanticized.
Our trauma was documented — but our joy was not centered.

Now we are waking up.

We are decentering deficit narratives.
We are dismantling internalized limitations.
We are disrupting systems that only prepare our children to survive.

But disruption alone is not enough.

We must build.

I created the Black Joy Galaxy from the conviction that healing is essential — but joy is transformative.

Trauma-informed care stabilizes.
Joy-centered empowerment expands.

While trauma-informed practices play a critical role in restoring dignity and reducing harm, Black Joy Galaxy builds upon that foundation by cultivating identity affirmation, collective belonging, and imaginative expansion.

Healing stops the bleeding.
Joy builds the future.
Empowered young people build the galaxy.

The Opportunity

Trauma-informed schools create safety and structure. Yet even in the most responsive environments, Black and Brown students may still experience:

Identity shaped by adversity rather than agency

Safety without inspiration

Regulation without expansion

Support without visionary possibility

Black Joy Galaxy addresses this next stage of development.

By intentionally centering culturally grounded joy, schools and communities move from stabilization to empowerment — transforming climate, narrative, and scholar self-concept.

Implementation Pathways

Black Joy Galaxy integrates into trauma-informed reform through:

Scholar Workshop Series

Educator Professional Development

Culture Integration Partnerships

School Climate Enhancement Initiatives

This framework complements — not replaces — trauma-informed systems by advancing schools into joy-empowered communities.
